Originally titled 'Swallow', New Hymn for the Rapture's refrain is a reference to old Sailor lore. The story goes that sailors got swallow tattoos with the hope that, upon their death, the bird would carry their souls to heaven. Cool story, sailor creeps. The apocalyptic-ish scene of the verse are visions of religious and intellectually inept upbringings, to which billions of humans are regularly subjected. For all the cigarettes and bad relationships and bad ideas we've evaded and are currently trying to evade, we sincerely hope everyone gets a personal bird that flies us to an actual golden shore. By and by, of course.
lyrics
Hope you carry me to heaven
in a long black gown, when the trees of earth are burning, while the empire's falling down
when my muscle car is humming, while my baby sings a hymn, while my cigarette is burning, while your hearts belong to sin
you might see me in the morning, by the fiery dirt and sky, but i'm bound for golden shores in the evening by and by, i'm bound for golden shores by and by
hope you carry me to heaven
in a long black veil, all the back yard mamas posting all the driveway daddys bail, when them southern birds come singing, while my darling tells a lie, when all the world's half dreaming up a thousand ways to die
you might see me in the morning, by the fiery dirt and sky, but i'm bound for golden shores in the evening by and by. i'm bound for golden shores by and by
